Pony Express Lake Freeze-Out Campout

Pony Express Lake (Osborn, MO) - Hiking, scout skills, and some orienteering on a beautiful warm and sunny day at the lake sounds awesome...until the blizzard rolls in!  Scouts prepared for a great camping weekend with may scout skills to teach and practice.  The weather was great and sun was shining. Shorts, t-shirts, and sunburns were the order for the day.  The scouts busied themselves with preparing camp and having fun by the lake and practicing woodsman skills, direction finding, cooking skills, hiking, and orienteering.  The dinner meal of fried chicken strips, mashed potatoes, corn, gravy, and rolls was delicious......and then the weather hit.  As the scouts finished up their meals, the day of fun in the sun was over, winds of up to 25 miles per hour, freezing rain, and snow made for an exciting and diverse camping experience that night.  The next mornings sight of scouts dressed in thermal underwear, heavy coats, caps and gloves was surreal and the warm days of yesterday lingered on everyone's minds.  When will this winter ever end?  Soon hopefully but any day camping, regardless of the weather, is always something to look forward to with Troop 21.
