Canoes and Catfish

Oskaloosa, KS - Troop 21 spent a steamy July weekend at one of our favorite scout friendly lakes...Lake Jayhawk at Falley Scout Reservation.  Troop 21 camped at Boone right next to the lake and had a great time as usual.  Swimming in the cool clear lake at the swim docks, canoeing, row-boating, and fishing were on the agenda.  The troop loved swimming so much we even did that one twice with the help of lifeguards and lookouts keeping the Troop safe.  Two scouts toughed it out and earned the canoeing merit badge and muscled through the various drills and skills required to earn the demanding badge.  Always fun are the rollover drills and deep water canoe-over-canoe rescues.

In usual Troop fashion we did two late night hikes exploring Falley after dark.  The scouts enjoyed exploring new trails and had a sing along on top of inspiration point into the echo valley below.  Those that stayed back at the campsite were on-guard for a raccoon invasion looking to feast on any unsuspecting scout snacks.  On Sunday morning the scouts went to feed the catfish at the boat dock.  It appeared that it was even too hot for the fish as most were resting in deep water that morning but some lucky catfish at the swimming docks enjoyed a feast of bread and tortillas.

As usual, a good time was had by all and many scouts enjoyed their first swim in a nice clear lake.
