13 Scouts and 8 Leaders From Troop 216 Share Their Philmont Trek Experience

A total of thirteen Boy Scouts and eight leaders from Troop 216 returned  to St. Joseph from a two -week stay at Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico. Here is the group at the train station ready to depart:

Two crews made what amounts to a Scouting pilgrimage to Philmont, the premier high adventure base serving over one million participants since 1938.

The youth and advisors carried everything they needed to survive during the trek on their backs while hiking from camp to camp.  Backcountry programs along the way included rock climbing, rappelling, fly-fishing, gold prospecting, tour of a gold mine, and horseback riding. A conservation project was performed where the Scouts learned and participated in the upkeep of Philmont's ecosystem.

The Scouts endured tough challenges including backpacking in bear and mountain lion territory, steep climbs, often-inclement weather, and having to purify their drinking water.
