Pony Express Council member and St. Joseph police officer injured on duty by texting driver.

St. Joseph Police officer Jayson Person, who serves as Pony Express Council  offseason Shooting Sports Committee Chairman, Tribal Council member, and Council Training Chairman was slightly injured by a texting motorist in the early morning hours of Tuesday May 19, 2009. Officer Jill Stevens was also injured in the crash.  Both officers were treated for minor injuries and released. The following message was sent to the council from Jayson:

"I have received lots of phone calls from friends checking on me and I appreciate it.

The driver of the striking vehicle was allegedly texting someone and not paying attention to what he was doing.  I was sitting stationary in the right hand lane of I 29 south bound at about Mitchell Ave.  I had just gotten back in to my car and was getting ready to get out with my reflective vest to waive motorists in to the left lane.  I was struck from the rear and pushed 25 feet in to another squad car sitting in front of me.  I was extricated and taken to Heartland Hospital by ambulance.  I have some soreness and am a little stiff but other than that I am okay.

My hope is that some of you with younger drivers in your families will share these photos.  I certainly don't wish to make a bigger deal out of this than it already is.  If it had not been for the prisoner cage in my car I would have been in much worse shape.  Hopefully this will open a few eyes and people will think twice about texting while driving.  Just talking on the phone is enough of an attention divider let alone trying to punch little keys to spell out a message.

Take care every one.  JP"
