Crossed Arrows Klondike 2012 Report
After check in, set up & Cracker Barrel, a wind coming from the Northwest Chilled the Friday night & got most in their tents early. The temp dropped during the night and I was glad to have the extra fuzzy liner in my sleeping bag. We awoke to a wind shaking tarp and temps that were on the rise. After a good breakfast for most & Saturday morning set up and check in for others, the teams assembled. They were given their instructions and along with the Leaders they headed out for a morning of earning Klondike Gold and points in a number of activities. We Broke for Lunch and Started again shortly afternoon. By the end of the day one would think those boys would be tired. After all they had spent their day Pulling Together their loaded sled in part by building Shelter, Fire, Tying knots, Crossing creeks on Rope & Timber bridges, Doing First Aid & Ice rescues, Raising their Loaded sled into a tree, Learning knife and Ax safety & throwing tomahawks. That is just part of what they had done before 3:00 pm. All of the Leaders found this not to be true when we tried to pick out the fastest sled @ the 3:00 race. “Double the length and put a hair pin turn in it,” one of the leaders said. That should get enough separation in the teams so we may determine the places. It was still close and they are all winners in our eyes. After the race they headed to the trading post to spend their gold that they had earned at the stops along the trail. Due to the dry conditions and the wind we did not light the evening camp fire but we did get together and let everybody know how they did on the events. It was warmer Saturday night and it got quite early I think the boys were tired at this time. I slipped over to Troop 175’s tent and had some of there Apple Cobbler. We woke up to a little ice Sunday morning but it was quickly melting. We had a short Church service after breakfast Packed and headed home. We had 15 Webelos, 84 Scouts and 53 Leaders Register. They came from Cameron, Gallatin, Hamilton, Lathrop, Plattsburg, Stewartsville, Winston.
Thank you, To All of the Leaders and Scouts who helped pull this off.
Sincerely, Van Dunham
