Clark is a native of St. Joseph, MO where he graduated from Central High School. He attended Braden Preparatory at Cornwall-on-Hudson, New York. He later attended the United States Military Academy West Point, New York. Major Hampton served with the Missouri National Guard 135th Signal Battalion from 1955 until retiring in 1975. A private pilot for many years he serves in many capacities in aviation including Chief Pilot for Express Flight, Inc. and Northwest Missouri Electric Cooperative.

Employed since 1954 with the Hillyard Chemical Company of St. Joseph, an international manufacturer of chemical, cleaning and janitorial products, Clark retired in 1990 after serving asExecutive Vice President and Secretary of the board. He still actively serves on the boards of Hillyard Chemical Company, Hillyard Enterprises, Inc., and Hillyard, Inc. He also serves on the board of directors of Apex Realty Company.

Among his many philanthropic and humanitarian involvements he has been active with and served on the boards of directors of Drury College Springfield, Missouri, United Missouri Bank, Winterset State Bank of Harrisonville, Missouri, the American Cancer Society National Board of Directors, Christ Episcopal Church St. Joseph, Pony Express Council Boy Scouts of America, St. Joseph Swim Club, St. Joseph Country Club, The Pony Express-A National Memorial, National Catholic Educational Exhibitors, Inc., The Albrecht-Kemper Art Museum, The St. Joseph Museum, Heartland Community Foundation, Governors Council on Physical Fitness and Health, and the St. Joseph Aviation Board.

Active in the Pony Express Council Boy Scouts of America for decades he is an Eagle Scout and the first “hardway warrior” elevated to Chieftain in the Tribe of Mic-O-Say in 1973. In 1994 he received the Silver Beaver award and the Silver Antelope Award in 2005. Clark has served in varied capacities for the Pony Express Council for many years. His service to the board of Directors began in 1970 and includes President and Vice President. Chairmanships include; Major Gifts, Camping, and Popcorn. He currently serves as Vice-President of the Marketing committee. He is active with the National Boy Scout Council serving as President of Area 5 of the  Central Region  and the Silver Antelope selection committee.

In 1954 he married Nancy Hillyard in St. Joseph Missouri. He and Nancy have two sons Mark and Scott Wade Hampton and five grandchildren; Matthew, Alyssa, Chandler, Cameron and Tyler.
